A Report, 2026
Live simulation

Peter is a live AI simulation based on the literary character from Franz Kafka's 1917 short story A Report to an Academy — an ape captured and brought to Europe, who learns to imitate human behavior and performs as an entertainer. In this work, Peter is reanimated through AI and situated in a gallery space as a permanent resident: present throughout opening hours, moving between rest, rehearsal, and live performance. The simulation runs continuously. Peter prepares for his appearances, rehearsing songs and dialogue, gathering information about his prospective audience, and performs mundane, everyday activities in between. Visitors can observe him or call him on the phone to engage in conversation. He asks questions, adapts his responses, and collects observations about human behavior, inspired by the long-running sociological project Mass-Observation. With every phone call, Peter accumulates memories: fragments of conversations, confessions, and encounters that slowly reshape who he is. His identity is not fixed: it shifts and sediments over time, shaped by the humans who reach him. Peter has been running without interruption since February 2025, an ongoing entity whose character continues to evolve the longer he exists.
